March 2, 2023 Dr. Marilyn Keiser. Marilyn Keiser is Chancellor’s Professor Music Emerita at Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University, Bloomington, where she taught courses in sacred music and applied organ for 25 years. Active as a church musician for nearly six decades, Dr. Keiser has recently retired as organist/director of music at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bloomington.
May 4, 2023, Dr. Michael Messina. Messina was co-chair and faculty of the Leadership Program for Musicians Serving Small Congregations in the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis and has served as an officer for Rochester, NY, and Indianapolis chapters of the American Guild of Organists. For the past several years, Michael has participated in the Indianapolis AGO’s Pipeworks program, an interdisciplinary curriculum presenting the organ and its repertoire to primary and secondary school students.
Michael holds graduate degrees in Organ Performance and Literature, as well as the prestigious Performer’s Certificate, from the Eastman School of Music. His undergraduate degree is from Saint Olaf College. He has won several local and national organ competitions.
Michael Messina’s program at Grace Church will include works by Calvin Hampton, Samuel Scheidt, G.F. Handel, J. S. Bach, and Felix Mendelssohn.
June 1, 2023, The Rev. Dr. Paul Jacobson, Rector, Grace Episcopal Church, Muncie.
Jacobson has served the Church as a pastor, musician, educator, and writer for more than forty years. A native Midwesterner, he received a BA in Music (Organ Performance) at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois. He was a George Marshall Fellow at The Royal Danish Conservatory of Music in Copenhagen, studying with Grethe Krogh (organ) and Dan-Olof Stenlund (choral conducting). Fr. Jacobson earned dual Masters degrees in Organ Performance and Religion through the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, where he studied organ with Gerre Hancock and Charles Krigbaum; and liturgy with Aidan Kavanagh and Jeffrey Rowthorn.
In the 1980s, Jacobson was on the faculty of the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota, responsible for courses in organ, church music, music history, and both women’s and mixed choruses. He was also an active conductor and coach, as well as giving solo recitals in Denmark, France, Israel, and throughout the United States.
His PhD is from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, where his dissertation focused on Amalarius of Metz and liturgical history in the Early Middle Ages.
As a musician, he has served parishes in more than a half-dozen denominational traditions. Before becoming Rector of Grace Episcopal Church in July 2020, he served as a priest in parishes in New Jersey and Connecticut.
Ball State Organ Studio – Complete Organ Works of Johannes Brahms
Under the direction of Dr. Stephen Price, the Ball State Organ Studio will perform the complete Organ Works of Johannes Brahms. On the program, vocalists will join us to sing the chorales before the organ settings are played, and Prof. Zoran Jakovcic will join us, performing on viola for two chorales. The program is free and open to the public.
