Message from the Dean

Welcome to the website of the Finland Chapter of the American Guild of Organists!

In the land of a thousand lakes up in the Northern Europe we have remarkable organs like the Porthan-organ (1998) in Kotka Church or the Walcker-organ (1981) in Helsinki St. John’s Church. The Organo hall of the Helsinki Music Centre offers a multitude of organ sounds from different eras of organ building with its three very special organs.

One of the most anticipated highlights of this year was the master class and the concert of the great organist and pedagogue James David Christie from February 28, until March 2. The Master class started with works by Nicolas de Grigny on the Porthan-Organ of Pakila Church in Helsinki with students of the Sibelius-Academy. Organ works by Dietrich Buxtehude were the subject of the second day of the Master class on the Northern German baroque style organ by Verschueren in the Organo Hall of the Helsinki Music Centre. The students enjoyed very much to work with James David Christie.

Prof. Christie played a splendid program with works by J. S. Bach, Sweelinck, de Macque, Salvatore, Storace, Vivaldi, Buttstedt & Buxtehude at the Organo-Hall of the Helsinki Music Centre. James David Christie’s visit was organized by the Sibelius-Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki in co-operation with the Organum Society and the AGO Finland Chapter.

Join us at Montreal Organ Festival and the Northeast Regional Convention of the American Guild of Organists in Montreal July 2–6. You find us at Sheraton hotel at the exhibit booth 33. Welcome to check Finnish organ music in musical scores and CDs! We have virtuosic concert music, music for the service and for youngsters. You are interested in studying church music or gaining a Doctor of Music degree in Finland, we can tell you, what possibilities do you have for example at the Sibelius Academy Helsinki. I hope, this will be the beginning of a very fruitful exchange of organ art of our Northern countries in America and Europe.

You might consider becoming a member of the Finland Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. What would be a more suitable year to join us to promote the Finnish-American music connection than the year of Finland’s centennial anniversary of its independence?!
