From our Regional Councillor
Sarah Hawbecker, our Regional Councillor, has established our own Region IV AGO blog. This is meant for everyone to easily access information so please share: http://www.agoregion4.blogspot.com. The intent is to add a calendar of major events of interest to our region. This will be very helpful for people traveling who want to know what’s going on in the chapter of the city they’re visiting. It would be too much to list every musical event happening in our seven and a half states plus Bermuda, so it will be limited to Chapter programs, major recitals, workshops, and church music conferences.

From our Dean
Dear Friends,
I'm sure we all agree that the summer is flying by all too quickly. I do hope each of you has had time for much-needed rest, perhaps some travel-time, and that your batteries are re-charged.
Much has been happening in our Chapter this summer. In this newsletter you will find the exciting list of Programs for the 2008 - 2009 season. Thanks to our Sub-Dean Dick Benedum for all of his great work in planning an outstanding season of concerts and opportunities for learning and fellowship. Please mark you calendars! You will not want to miss a single program this year. You will also find a newly updated Fee Schedule. The Board approved the careful and detailed work of Jim Hawkinson and Roger Roszell to bring us the new Recommended Minimum Substitute Fees for our chapter. This month, Seth Wertz and Roger Roszell are putting the details of our new Yearbook and Directory advertising together. Convention Co-Chairs Roy Roberts and Jack Levick are ready to unveil at the September meeting exciting plans for our Mid-Winter Conclave to be held in January 2010.
I have been thrilled to experience such a positive attitude in our chapter as I have recruited our Support Team for the coming year. Their energy and devotion make it possible for the work of the Guild to move forward. Each and every one of you makes up the very heart of this Chapter. I challenge you this year to lend your voice by attending meetings and programs and to offer your support in thought, word, and deed.
What a privilege it was to attend the AGO National Convention in Minneapolis June 22 - 26. Also present from our Chapter were Cynthia Roberts-Greene and Nancy Siebecker. Nearly 1800 attendees in all gathered in the Twin Cities for a week of wallowing in a wide variety of concerts, worship, master classes, workshops, reading sessions, shopping the 102 exhibits, and sharing ideas and fellowship with new and old friends from all over the country.

AGO National Highlight from Greg Chestnut:
For me, the highlights were the beginning and the end. I approach the Opening Hymn of a convention with great anticipation. Led by choirs of the Downtown Minneapolis Churches, accompanied by brass and the Casavant organ of Central Lutheran Church, the congregation sang the Stephen Paulus setting of When In Our Music God is Glorified. It was a transcendent moment for us all. The concluding concert of the week was held in the massive Cathedral of St. Paul. While soloists, orchestra, and combined choirs presented an exquisite evening, it was the Pilgrims' Hymn, again by Stephen Paulus, sung a capella that moved many of us to tears. Here is the partial text:
Even before we call on Your name
To ask You, O God,
When we seek for the words to glorify You,
You hear our prayer;
Unceasing love, O unceasing love,
Surpassing all we know.

AGO National Highlight from Cynthia Roberts-Greene:
The highlight of the AGO Twin Cities national convention for me was the evensong and evening concert presented by St. Paul Cathedral (London) choir. The organ scholar of St. Paul's is as proficient as any organist could possibly be. For me, this young man was the highlight of all the organists at the convention. His versatility as a gifted service player was juxtaposed with his artistry as a virtuoso. I truly enjoyed hearing the choir's pure, rich sound under the direction of sub organist, Huw Williams.

AGO National Highlight from Nancy Siebecker:
If you have never attended an AGO national convention or perhaps just one in the distant past, I encourage you to consider it in the future. While denominational summer workshops are practical, educational, usually closer to home and less expensive (I’ve attended many!), there is nothing like a national to get the heart and brain waves pumping. You can experience five days and nights of back-to-back organ recitals, various types of worship, workshops, choral/organ concerts, exhibits, and at this Minneapolis convention, concerts by the incomparable St. Paul Cathedral Choir of London and a live taping of “Pipedreams”.
For me, personally, some of the best time in Minneapolis was spent in reconnecting with “old” friends, colleagues and former students, and in talking with present students and meeting “new” friends. The quality of organ performances was superb and the music of AGO composer of the year Stephen Paulus thrilling. You can learn while enjoying yourself. Consider going in two years!

New Music Conference Comes to Sarasota
On May 30th and 31st St. Armands Key Lutheran church played host to the new Gloria Deo Annual Music Conference. Sponsored by PineLake Music, out of Atlanta, this conference is one of many that they offer across the country throughout the year. The slightly different format of a massed choir rehearsal on Friday afternoon with a concert on Friday evening, and a choral workshop on Saturday was well received. Seventy singers participated in the choir for Friday evening's concert with 114 directors and singers attending the reading session. We were privileged to have Joseph Martin, Pepper Choplin and David Schwoebel as the clinicians. All three of these gifted composers directed and performed at the Friday evening concert, and also led the day long Saturday Reading Sessions. Tom Mathis was our organist of the day, and Lois Mellor was our accompanist. It was truly a memorable time for all who attended. Directors and singers from as far away as Hudson, Ft. Myers and Lakeland attended.

Gloria Deo 2009 Sacred Music Conference will take place on Friday and Saturday, January 30 and 31 at St. Armands Key Lutheran Church. Another winning group of composers will be leading this conference: Joseph Martin, Lloyd Larson and Nancy Price. Watch for a save-the-date Announcement in your mail, and mark your calendars now. Be sure to visit www.PineLakemusic.com for further information. I hope many of you will plan on attending in the coming year.
Blessings, Jane Lautner
