Message from the Dean

From the Dean.........

It’s hard to believe that Lent and Easter have come
and gone, for after that, the year always seems to
wind down quickly. It’s time to start planning for
summer musical activities, local and otherwise. It’s
not too late to sign up for the National Convention in
Minneapolis in June, the UCC Musician’s Association
summer conference in Portland this year, or for many
other available educational opportunities. Check out
our magazine “The American Organist” for possibilities.
Have you ever considered preparing for and
taking a Guild exam? This is another good way to
sharpen your skills and summer might be a good time
to start preparing.

Our Annual Meeting has been changed from May 18
to June 14. Details will be in the next VOX.

Our next Chapter event, a Mid Coast organ crawl,
is coming up in April. We’re looking forward to
seeing some fine organs in a locale we don’t usually
get to. Hope you can join us on Patriot’s Day!

Portland Chapter AGO
Annual Meeting
Saturday, June 14,2008
The Temple
at Old Orchard Park

The AGO has designated 2008-09 as the
International Year of the Organ. As part of this celebration,
October 19, 2008 has been designated as
the official date for an Organ Spectacular concert.
Every chapter, along with various musical friends
and groups from around the world, is encouraged to
participate in this event. We hope that the winning
composition from our composition competition for
this event will be played at this concert.
The Professional Networking and Public Relations
Committee is pleased to report that the composition
competition was a wonderful success, with
36 entrants from around the world. Compositions
were received from: California, Connecticut, Florida,
Hawaii, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts,
Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, New
Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon,
Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin,
as well as from Canada, England, and Germany.
The piece was to be for organ and C instrument,
of easy to moderate difficulty, unpublished, and of
no more than 5 minutes in length. We owe special
thanks to Dr. Larry Schou, who chaired the competition,
to all those who competed, and to our three
judges: Mary Beth Bennett, Emma Lou Diemer, and
Mark Sedio. It was a blind competition--the judges
had no idea who the composers were.
The first prize composition will be published by
Concordia this spring and will be discussed and
analyzed on the BinAural Collaborative Hypertext
(B.A.C.H.) site at www.bach.nau.edu website.
hope that most of the Organ Spectacular concerts
on Oct. 19 will include this piece. The three prize
winners received monetary prizes from Hal Hinkle, a
benefactor to and patron of the arts, who has particular
interests in the organ, Bach, and the environment.

The winners are:
1st prize: “Ornament of Grace” for organ and violin
or oboe written by Bernard Wayne Sanders of Muehlheim,
Germany
2nd prize: “Toccata Duo” for organ and trumpet,
flute or violin written by Paul Ayres of Greenford, UK
3rd prize: “Reach for the Stars” for organ and oboe
written by Jon Naples of Carlsbad, California

From Our Regional Counsellor
Since starting my position nearly a year ago, the
challenge has always been to get information out to
leaders and chapters in a timely method. The value of
a region-wide calendar has been discussed at nearly
every chapter I visit.
I have set up a Region I blog. I think that one of the
most useful features of the blog will be the regional
calendar. As I’ve requested on the blog, please send
me chapter-sponsored programs that you would like
added to the calendar. (I’m hoping that maintaining
the calendar will not become a full-time job!)
Please take a look at the blog when you have a

“An Evening of Music
By Harold Stover”
Saturday, May 17, 2008
A concert to honor organist,
conductor and
composer Harold Stover,
who served two terms as
Dean of the Portland and
NYC AGO, is slated for
Saturday, May 17, 2008,
beginning at 7:30 p.m. at
Wodfords Congregational
Church in Portland.
The all-Stover program
will include the Maine
premiere of three vocal and choral works and first
performance of new works for piano. A reception will
follow at the church.
Members from both the Woodfords Chancel Choir and
Renaissance Voices that Stover directs came together
to organize the May 17 concert as an “affectionate
tribute to the man and his music,” according to organizer
Pete Sampson. 2008 marks both the 15th anniversary
of Stover’s leadership as Organist and Director
of Music at Woodfords and 40-year milestone of
his distinguished musical career performing to critical
acclaim in the U.S. and Europe and writing, teaching
and composing contemporary choral and vocal music
widely sung by choirs across America.
The anniversary concert, with Harold’s blessing and
enthusiasm, will also bear his artistic direction. Soloists
will include soprano Rhee Michelle, alto Kathleen
Grammer, trumpeter John Schnell, percussionist
Nancy Smith, performing with Renaissance Voices
and The Chancel Choir of Woodfords Church, with
Barbara Sutcliffe, alto, Bruce Canterbury, horn, and
the Woodfords Ringers handbells.
Stover began directing Renaissance Voices in 2001,
served as President of the Friends of the Kotzschmar
Organ from 2003 until 2006 and is a member of the
Portland Conservatory of Music faculty. He has been
featured in seven appearances as a performer and
composer on Pipedreams, and on Albany Records’
CD An American Album. Additionally, he lectures and
performs at regional and national AGO conventions.

From Our Regional Counsellor-

Since starting my position nearly a year ago, the challengehas always been to get information out to leaders and chapters in a timely method.
I am a big userof email and, occasionally, even the USPS.
But, while I get newsletters from all twenty chapters, most of our members do not. Consequently, they do not always know of the incredible programs offered by chapters.

The value of a region-wide calendar has been discussed at nearly every chapter I visit.
So, with the magic of technology, I have set up a Region
I blog. A blog is a website with postings that are
customarily displayed in reverse order (i.e., newest at
the top), with the postings typically being text, images,
videos, or links to other websites. I think that one of
the most useful features of the blog will be the regional
calendar. As I’ve requested on the blog, please
send me chapter-sponsored programs that you would
like added to the calendar. (I’m hoping that maintaining
the calendar will not become a full-time job!)
Please take a look at the blog when you have a
chance, send me calendar items, and spread the
word to your members.

MEMBER NEWS...

An organ is reborn! The 1903 Felgemaker,
originally built for the Catholic church in Garrison
Keillor’s home town of Anoka, Minn. is speaking once
again in the Yarmouth studio of Nancy Wines-DeWan.
It was last heard in the Foreside Community Church
in Falmouth before it was removed and placed in storage in Massachusetts a few years ago.
Two years ago, Nancy with the help of organbuilder David Wallace moved the instrument up to Maine and began the job of renovating it. When completed, the instrument will have 11 ranks on 2 manuals and pedal.
