| A Message from the AGO Executive Director:
This page contains information about the AGO's efforts to provide relief to AGO members in the Gulf States who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. We plan to update this page regularly with contact information and news about members from the New Orleans and South Missisippi Chapters. We will also provide guidance to help members obtain new jobs, housing, and musical scores. Guild members who wish to help those who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina are welcome to communicate their offers and suggestions by writing to <hurricanerelief@agohq.org>. Their postings will be transferred to this website under an appropriate heading. Opportunities to provide financial aid are described immediately below. HOW TO PROVIDE FINANCIAL AID TO AGO MEMBERS IN THE GULF STATES The AGO is now able to accept financial gifts that will be used exclusively to provide assistance to AGO members in the region affected by Hurricane Katrina. All funds received for hurricane relief will be allocated to support the AGO members and chapters affected by the storm, in consultation with the leadership of those chapters. Checks should be made payable to the AGO, indicating in the memo line that the funds are to be used for “Hurricane Relief.” Checks should be mailed to AGO National Headquarters, Hurricane Relief, 475 Riverside Drive, Suite 1260, New York, NY 10115. Contributions can also be made at www.agohq.org/contributions using our secure online form. A Note from the Dean of the New Orleans Chapter My dear New Orleans Chapter members, I do so hope that this little missive finds you all safe, well, and housed comfortably. There aren’t too many things to say about Katrina and all of the damage inflicted on our city, our instruments, our homes, and our livelihoods that haven’t already been said, so let’s leave it at, ‘Well, that happened,’ and move on to more positive things that are in the works. I’ve been contacted by our Regional Councillor Sarah Hawbecker and by AGO Executive Director James Thomashower. Their very real concern was to identify ways in which the National Office could assist us as individuals and as a chapter during this difficult time. One of the main things that we discussed was to first and foremost attempt to locate our members and to assure ourselves of their safety. Please check the list shown on this page and please let Secretary/Treasurer John DeMajo or myself know whether that you’re safe. You can give us your contact/address information if you’d like; that would make things simple if we should need to contact you. Or, if you would rather not list your personal information on the page, just contact us and let us know that you’re “high and dry”. I know that many of us have family and friends upon whom we can depend for indefinite housing, etc.; however, all of us are not in that position. If there’s someone on that list whose whereabouts you know and there’s no descriptor by their name to indicate that they’ve been accounted for, please drop John or myself an email to let us know. We’ll see that the appropriate info makes it to the list. An appeal has, I think, by now gone out to the Deans of all chapters to let them know that there are displaced organists from New Orleans and the Gulf Coast spread out all across the country. Whatever chapter you’ve landed in, contact the Dean or another officers to let them know of your presence. Most chapters have Web sites with such contact information readily available, and you can find them listed all listed on National’s site. Attend a meeting if you can, and let yourself be introduced to those in attendance. Ask if your name could be included in the particular chapter’s newsletter as a sub, with a mention that you’re an evacuee from New Orleans or from the Gulf Coast. You may find that there are folks that would be more than willing to take a day off just to give you a chance to work a bit. If you’re in a city of some size, you may be able to get all of the sub work you can handle, and you might even find yourself a temporary job in the area to hold you for a while. If you’ve lost your organ music to water, wind, whatever, please let us know that, as well. National is working on the prospect of ultimately helping to replace that music where needed. As above, you need to make us aware of the situation. None of this is easy for any of us, but here it is and we will deal with it. Organists/choirmasters are a tough lot and accustomed to dealing with adversity on all kinds of levels. We are also capable of incredible care and devotion and empathy; else, we wouldn’t do what we do. To quote Blanche, I think this is one of those times that we can allow ourselves “to depend on the kindness of strangers.” To my own chapter members who have the means to respond financially to this predicament, I urge you to do so. Some of us are fortunate to have jobs that will pay us throughout the downtime. Most of us are not; they play multiple services at multiple churches, and are currently without any income at all. The means to give is provided there through National’s Web site. Please do what you can to help our own chapter members during this tough time.
