A.S.A.P. – After School Arts Program seeks Volunteers, Instruments

Johns Island Presbyterian Church is starting a powerful new after school program this fall that will provide education in music, dance, visual art, and drama exclusively to low-income families for a very small fee. We are seeking volunteers to help teach, transport students, etc. If you are interested in participating as a volunteer, please contact the Director of Music, Eric Johnson at ejohnson@jipc.org or 843.559.9380.

We are also collecting musical instruments to loan to needy students taking private lessons. If you have an instrument that you no longer need, consider donating to our program. It will be a charitable tax donation, and the student who uses your old instrument will be grateful for the gift of music! If you would like to donate, contact the Director of Music.

PROFESSIONAL CONCERNS CORNER by Porter Remington
What is a Professional Concern? Anything you have a thought or feeling about will lead you to an answer, or maybe a question! Money - Salary - Budgets - Relationships - How to work with a committee - How to motivate people - How to ask for what you need - How to take care of yourself. What else can you think of?

If we do not address these issues, then we are not educating our congregations about music as a profession. Anyone who plays a funeral for free is hurting our profession. Anyone who does not charge an appropriate wedding fee is hurting our profession. Meanwhile the funeral directors, florists, caterers, piano tuners and photographers — are all raising their fees. We are being left behind.

Do not ever be afraid to approach your clergy/music committee/personnel committee with the idea of making fees appropriate for 2007. It is YOUR responsibility!
