Message from the Dean

From the Dean… October 28, 2009
Thank you to First United Methodist Church for hosting the Chapter dinner meeting and recital
on Thursday, October 22. And we extend special thanks to Dick Taylor for being such a gracious host,
and to Phil Judkins for his work on the organ, and his excellent remarks about the organ’s history.
It was a special treat to host Daniel O’Connor, the first-prize winner of the Region VII AGO/Quimby Regional Competition for Young Organists. Despite having two flights cancelled on his way from Appleton, Wisconsin, and then having his luggage lost somewhere in space, Daniel showed a remarkable composure and maturity! He had a great time, and played really well, using the organ beautifully. Daniel will play at the AGO National Convention in Washington DC in July, 2010, and he will be an excellent representative for Region VII!
Be sure you have reserved Monday, November 23 for the Hymn Festival at St Pius X Catholic Church. Coordinated by Mike McCrary, it promises to be an evening of beautiful and inspiring music led by the Sapulpa High School Choir, Tulsa Festival Ringers and Tulsa Symphony Orchestra Brass Quartet. You will enjoy readings by Edward Dumit, and hearing or singing different settings of hymns with organ, brass, handbells and congregation – prepare to be thankful at the beginning of Thanksgiving week!
Potluck Dinner is at 6:15pm – meat will be provided. Bring a salad, vegetable or dessert, or make a small donation if you would rather not cook! There is always plenty of food, but just so we know how much meat to prepare, please let Fred Elder know that you are coming by Friday, November 20.
Call 622-1472 or email fredelder@cox.net There is a flyer attached – please print and post!
I’m sure you have noticed that this program year highlights students – organ students, the Sapulpa High School Choir, the Tulsa Youth Symphony and more. As we think about the role these students will play in our future, I would challenge you: how do you support these young people? Do you invite students to our programs? Do you encourage that all-important next generation of organists? When a young person says “That was cool!” after you play, what do you do? When a student needs a place to practice, do you welcome them and do everything you can to make your instrument available? Does your church/school/synagogue understand the necessity of making their organ available to students for practice? I believe that how we respond may ultimately determine if there will be future generations of organists.
Remember and be thankful for all the people who encouraged you!
Karen
