June LeBell said in a review of their Christmas program "...their blend, ability to get words across and purity of sound makes them one of the finest choral groups I've heard in years....If they continue to go in this direction, you might hear them being spoken of in the same breath as Chanticleer. | From the Dean . . .
It was HOT! And I am not just talking about the days it was 103 degrees in Washington DC. AGO National was an amazing series of events in Worship, Concerts, Reading Sessions, Hymn Festival, times to learn & times to be social. The 2150 attendees were given the royal treatment . . . and I am still not quite sure how they moved so many people so very well from place to place! Bravo DC2010! I do want to relate to you one of the most amazing things I’ve ever witnessed musically. The place, the Church of Mount St. Sepulchre and Franciscan Monastery (Catholic); a gem of architecture and beauty of design and acoustic masterpiece, the center a domed altar area with four equal wings forming a perfect Greek Cross. The organ: III/41, Lively-Fulcher Organbuilders 2002 Electric Slider. The performers, Matthew Glandorf, Organist and Choir Master of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Philadelphia (Google him; he’s done some amazing things) and The Six, the choir that accompanies this extraordinary master of improvisation. The program: THE ART OF LITURGICAL IMPROVISATION; Te Deum in Stylus Fantasticus; Baroque Improvisations on "Kyrie, Gott Vater in Ewigkeit"; Two Gospel Preludes and Fugues; Improvisation on "Passion Chorale"; Improvisations on Salve Regina for Choir and Organ. And this program was ART in every sense of the word! Of this program the part the spoke most greatly to my heart, no, to my soul was the Improvisation on “Passion Chorale” . . . words can hardly describe what we witnessed, but I’ll do my best. It began with pure and lovely a cappella singing of the Passion Chorale, midway into the first verse the organ began, sweetly, with a hint of darkness, as the verses grown in intensity, so does the improvisation, the sound becoming BLACK and overwhelming the choir, and those of us listening, the impression was as if every voice in heaven was crying out together in anguish at the death of Christ . . . and then the blackness becomes light and hope again as the choir again emerges a cappella for the last portion “These eyes , new faith receiving, from thee shall never move, for all who die believing die safely in the love.” I spoke with Matt (whom I know from Philadelphia), he asked what I thought . . . I told him I had only one word . . . MIRACULOUS! And it was! For those of you who either haven’t ever or haven’t in a very long time attended an AGO Convention . . . you need to! It is a great time to collect ideas, exchange thoughts, reunite with old friends, and make new friends, experience things you’ve never considered or heard before . . . and speaking of something you’ve never heard before . . .the organ at National City Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) a big Moeller has a HANDBELL STOP! Yes, five octaves of handbells are mounted in the base of the organ case in the balcony of the sanctuary, pull a stop – doors open – handbells emerge and are playable from the console! AMAZING! Summer is fast becoming a memory, and it will be time in just a few weeks to begin rehearsals (for those of us that give our choirs time off for the summer), with fresh new outlooks on creating beautiful worship experiences. And in this new year, renew your commitment to AGO, be more active, join a committee, attend more events. Further on in the Montre you will find the schedule of events for our year; mark your calendars NOW! I want to see more and more of our chapter members at our events, and bring friends. There is a great deal of work that goes into planning and preparing for these events – please support them! Also, as you look over our calendar of upcoming events, support your colleagues, attend their concerts and events. It means more than you think for the performer, to see faces of fellow chapter members in attendance! I look forward to greeting everyone at our first meeting on Sunday, September 12th! Cheers! David +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ A newly created foundation, to provide funds for Sarasota's young musicians to draw on for lessons, instruments, or even college expenses, has been created by Roger W. Roszell and Faith Lutheran Church. Roger came-up with the idea for this project as the result of working with a variety of young people with varied instrumental and vocal talents, and from just as varied social-economic backgrounds, many of whom are studying at the new Sarasota Music Academy, founded by Sarasota Orchestra violinists Sean O'Neil and Lena Cambis. These and other issues confronting young musicians prompted Roszell to consider being supportive and encouraging to these aspiring young musicians. Some of them have already established themselves within the Sarasota Youth Philharmonic, or in fine high school orchestras and bands. Many of them study with the finest teachers in the area, usually members of the Sarasota Orchestra. Even these fine teachers need students to provide income to help them continue their careers in the wake of so many budget cuts in the arts and music. The first awards from this newly-created fund were made just recently when a number of members at Faith contributed towards this goal, in order to get news of this project "out there" and to provide awards to two of the church's wonderful young musicians. Financial assistance was provided to two area high school students as they graduated and prepare to go on to college: one male, one female, and from two different high schools, and going to two different colleges. Neither of these recipients had any prior association with Faith Lutheran Church before they became a part of the church's various musical ensembles, and they need not be members. Pastor Winemiller and Roszell emphasizes this: the non-restrictive aspect of these funds. "We hope people will consider donating their cars which would otherwise be traded-in, or even junked, and perhaps even real estate" one member suggests. "We need as broad a base of support as we can get in order to get this foundation firm and secure." they said. For further information call the Music Office of Faith Lutheran Church at (941) 924-4664. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Please contact Richard Benedum (312-5875, or richard.benedum@comcast.net), or any other officer/board member, if you’re interested in playing on a MEMBERS’ RECITAL during the coming year. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Harpsichord For Sale...
