| June/July 2010 Newsletter
Greetings! It’s hard to believe that July is upon us and our positions responsibilities are finally slowing down. Many belated thanks to Debbie Jenks for hosting Tom Trenney in Northport. It was a wonderful weekend, though I wasn’t able to attend the workshop, I have heard glowing reports of it. The hymn-sing that Sunday was magnificent. He certainly gave those of us in attendance some wonderful ideas to work with. We have had many fine events this year. One highlight for many of you I’m sure was the Martin Luther King Day Mini-Convention in Douglaston. There were so many things that we could take away from it, from music ideas to help with the stress of our jobs. We have toured organs in Nassau and Queens, heard an international artist, heard some wonderful hymn singing and visited a number of our local churches. We hope that even with our busy lives, that you have taken time to attend at least some of our events. It is time to renew your AGO memberships. Personalized Membership Renewal Forms were sent a couple of weeks ago. If you have not already done so, please follow the directions, and mail off your forms to Sr. Marilyn Pfriender, our chapter treasurer so your membership doesn’t lapse! Your Nassau AGO is already in the planning stages of 2010-11 season, and there are already many excellent events in the works. Don’t miss out. The election ballot has also been included in this mailing. We have wonderful candidates for sub-dean and secretary and we are grateful to our other officers who are willing to serve in the various capacities as well. If there is anything that you would like to see your Nassau AGO schedule, please let me know. Your AGO board and myself are always looking for ways to better serve our AGO members. The Nassau AGO is in need of substitutes. I have already sent an email out concerning this. Thanks to those that have responded. If you are able to sub on Saturday, Sunday, or for weekday funerals and/or weddings, please give me a call at church at (516) 931-2225, or email me at hdevries11801@yahoo.com and let me know your availability, so that you can be added to our sub list. Have a great and restful summer, take some time to learn a new piece, or take a workshop, don’t stop learning! You may be at AGO National Convention in Washington D.C., July 4-8, at the moment! -Henry |

Here’s to the Pipe Organ on Long Island! As many of you know, there was a marvelous article in the New York Times on January 15 regarding the pipe organ and Elsener Organ Works. Moeller, Rebuilt by Foley-Baker The organ at Garden City Community Church is Opus 10172 of M.P. Moller, built in 1966 and designed by Dr. Robert Baker. It is a 3-manual, 55-rank instrument that has just been reinstalled in the church after a complete restoration and releathering by Foley-Baker of Tolland, Connecticut. The work of Foley-Baker, in addition to releathering of bellows and windchests, included replacement of manual keyboards, addition of 32'Bourdon and 32' Lieblich Gedeckt from Walker Electronics, new solid state combination action from Classic Organ Works, and replacement of a heavy grille cloth covering the instrument at the front of the church with a much lighter weight cloth. The work has had a very positive effect on the sound of the organ, which now speaks into the room with a much clearer and distinctive presence. ___________________________________________________ Neighboring Chapters with websites: Brooklyn: www.home.nyc.rr.com/gynyc New York City: www.nycago.org Queens: www.agohq.org/chapter/?handle-queens Other related links: The Associated Pipe Organ Builders of America www.apoba.com Organ Clearing House www.organclearinghouse.com The Organ Historical Society www.organsociety.org The Encyclopedia of Organ Stops www.organstops.org Pipedreams www.pipedreams.org American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) www.acdaonline.org The Hymn Society www.bu.edu/sth/hymn Chorus America www.chorusamerica.org *********************************************************** WITH GRATEFUL ACKNOWLEDGMENT FOR THE SUPPORT OF THE AGO FOR THE CONTINUING EFFORTS OF THIS BENEFIT CONCERT!
