MARK HAYES COMPOSER'S WEEKEND
Saturday & Sunday August 21-22, 2010
First Baptist Church, Columbus Georgia

See the schedule for the weekend below. An excellent event for all choristers and keyboard musicians. All are welcome to sing or observe and can attend any or all events. There is a $10.00 fee for each Saturday workshop and for the evening dinner/concert.

ABOUT MARK HAYES
Mark Hayes earned a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from Baylor University (Waco, TX). He is an award-winning concert pianist, composer and arranger of choral, piano and orchestral music with over 550 published works to his credit. His music is widely acclaimed and performed internationally. His unique hymn settings are well known and draw from diverse styles such as gospel, jazz, pop, folk and classical to achieve a truly American sound. He currently resides in Kansas City, Missouri. event on August 21-22.

The weekend schedule is as follows:

SATURDAY, AUGUST 21

9:00am--12 noon CHORAL WORKSHOP ( $10.00 per person ) A list of anthems to be rehearsed can be obtained by calling the church at 706-322-4468

1:30--3:00pm MUSIC for SMALLER VOCAL ENSEMBLES with the First Baptist Adult Ensemble

3:30--5:00pm KEYBOARD SESSION for Church Pianists/Organists ( $10.00 per person )

6:30--8:00pm BARBECUE DINNER in the Fellowship Hall with after-dinner concert by Mark Hayes ( $10.00 per person )

SUNDAY, AUGUST 22

SERVICES at 8:30am and 11:00am with anthems, solos, and keyboard music by Mark Hayes






HYMN FESTIVAL with BRUCE NESWICK, Director of Cathedral music and Organist at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York City.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 12th at 5pm at Trinity Episcopal Church, Columbus, Georgia. Co-sponsored by the Columbus, Georgia, Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, Trinity Episcopal Church, St. Thomas Episcopal Church, and Joseph Golden.

The Mass Choir will rehearse on Saturday morning, September 11th, with lunch to follow. Guild members are invited to sing. Time will be forthcoming.

ABOUT BRUCE NESWICK
Before his appointment at the Cathedfral of St John the Divine, Mr. Neswick served as the Canon for Music at The Cathedral of Saint Philip, Atlanta, where he grew and nurtured one of the best chorister and adult choir programs in the country. He has also served as Assistant Organist-Choirmaster for the girl choristers at Washington National Cathedral and Director of Music at National Cathedral School for Girls and St. Albans School for Boys. Neswick began his professional career at Christ and St. Stephen’s Church and Trinity Church in New York.

Mr. Neswick is also a nationally and internationally acclaimed organist, having won first prize in the Rochette Concours (organ improvisation competition) at the Conservatoire de Musique, Geneva and the National Organ Improvisation Competition, American Guild of Organists, among many musical honors and accomplishments. He has also received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Pacific Lutheran University and holds the Fellowship degrees from both the American Guild of Organists and the Royal School of Church Music.

Mr. Neswick received a Bachelor of Music degree magna cum laude from Pacific Lutheran University and Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music. He did post-graduate studies at the Conservatoire de Musique, Geneva. His teachers have included David Dahl, Gerre Hancock, Robert Baker and Lionel Rogg.

American Guild of Organists

Meeting Minutes

The Columbus Chapter of the American Guild of Organists met on the evening of May 30, 2010 at the home of Pat and Bob Newton. Following a social hour, a brief business meeting was held. Dean Adelyn Scott began the meeting with an inspirational thought, after which she had members and guests introduce themselves. Subdean Rick McKnight announced that the Trinity Episcopal Church and the AG0 chapter would join in having Bruce Neswick for a program on September 12. Trinity's parish musician, Michael Snoddy, outlined programs that will be held throughout the year when the new church organ is installed. Joe Golden announced an upcoming Jordan Organ Festival, with more information to come.

Treasurer Tom Bernard announced that new membership forms are available and he encouraged members to renew memberships soon.

Those present then enjoyed a delicious dinner.

Following dinner, several members presented a brief concert, which included organ, piano, violin, voice, and choir, with the audience participating.

Their organist had to resign due to illness. The previous organist, Olin Pound, has been filling in part time but he cannot do it full time.
