Message from the Dean

Fast away the Old Year passes!

December, which always seemed to drag its feet when I was a child, in these latter days positively gallops. No time to shop, no time to write Christmas cards, no time to practice the organ, no time to attend the special concerts and services of colleagues. The seasonal merry-go-round whirls faster every year. But somehow we manage to keep our seats and not fall off into the midway or the marsh.

I hope that each of you were able to find a bit of quiet time; a space, however brief, to reflect on the great Mystery of Christmas. Topping off our celebrations is our chapter’s traditional Twelfth Night party – this year actually on Twelfth Night – Tuesday, January 5. Doug Ludlum has once again invited us to his home, 65 Radcliffe Street. So please show up at 6:30, and bring some festive food to share. (Also bring any tales of mirth, mischance or malfeasance connected with your Christmas services!) I look forward to seeing you all there.

PS: If you want a reeeeeeeally different idea for next Christmas, take a look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kYEK-pxs_A&feature=related

Click on www.psalmsandpalms.org to catch up on all the latest info for our Region IV Convention, January 17-20 in Sarasota, FL at the Lido Beach Resort. Isn’t that just what we’ll need after Christmas? Be sure to read all their links to past newsletters, too. They have lots and lots of goodies in their plans! A registration form is attached to this month's newsletter for your convenience.

George Hubbard, Dean

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM THE AGO NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS:
In an effort to increase the value of the benefits package for AGO voting members, access to the Positions Available listings on the AGO National Web site has been limited exclusively to AGO voting members as of Monday, December 15. It is appropriate that these listings should be made available only to voting members, since members’ dues pay for the operation of the Guild’s Web site and maintenance of its job postings board. In addition, this new limitation will ensure that only those organists who have agreed to abide by the AGO’s Code of Ethics and Code of Professional Standards will have access to the jobs advertised on the AGO’s Web site.

IMPORTANT MEMBER LOGIN INFORMATION
When you go to view the details of a Position Available online, you will be asked to fill in a User Name and Password. Your User Name and Password will be your unique AGO identification number. This number is located above your name on the address label that appears on your copy of TAO each month. When prompted to fill in the User Name and Password fields, please enter your ID number in both fields to gain access to the details of all job openings. This login procedure may be further refined and enhanced in the weeks ahead.

We look forward to providing this valuable benefit exclusively to AGO voting members. The Guild is widely recognized by religious institutions as the world’s largest and most prestigious association for professional organists, and this new policy will help us to preserve and protect our well-deserved reputation for excellence.

If you have any questions about this change, please feel free to contact AGO Headquarters during business hours at 212-870-2310 or e-mail us at members@agohq.org.

Shopping for American Guild of Organists gifts is easy. All merchandise can be ordered online at www.agohq.org/store or by phoning AGO store manager Harold Calhoun, 212-870-2311 (ext. 4318) or 800-AGO-5115. Additionally, orders can be placed via postal mail using the order form found on page 9 of each issue of The American Organist Magazine. All orders totaling $30 or more will qualify for a free gift: a CD recording of 2006 NYACOP winner Scott Montgomery.

A.S.A.P
The After School Arts Program is a non-profit outreach organization at Johns Island Presbyterian Church designed to make quality arts instruction available to children from low-income families. The program allows students to receive music lessons from a faculty of qualified volunteers at a nominal fee.

Volunteers are needed to bring healthy snacks on Thursday afternoons and/or to man the registration desk. If you are interested in volunteering on a weekly, monthly, or one-time basis, contact Sarah Smith (559-9380, ssmith@jipc.org).

Qualified teachers are needed to serve our students so we can continue to grow. Music is a life-long gift and we believe that every child should have the opportunity to develop that gift. If you or someone you know is a music teacher who would like to give a little extra to help change someone’s life, contact Sarah Smith (559-9380, ssmith@jipc.org).

PROFESSIONAL CONCERNS CORNER by Porter Remington
What is a Professional Concern? Anything you have a thought or feeling about will lead you to an answer, or maybe a question! Money - Salary - Budgets - Relationships - How to work with a committee - How to motivate people - How to ask for what you need - How to take care of yourself. What else can you think of?

If we do not address these issues, then we are not educating our congregations about music as a profession. Anyone who plays a funeral for free is hurting our profession. Anyone who does not charge an appropriate wedding fee is hurting our profession. Meanwhile the funeral directors, florists, caterers, piano tuners and photographers — are all raising their fees. We are being left behind.

Do not ever be afraid to approach your clergy/music committee/personnel committee with the idea of making fees appropriate for 2009. It is YOUR responsibility!
