Message from the Dean |
| Extract from September 2005 Dean's Message
When I started writing this September Dean's Message, it began developing as a typical "hope you had a pleasant summer...hope you're ready for the fall" message. Then Katrina struck, and my perspective shifted, drastically. My first thought was: how can we talk about ordinary things when so many people are suffering from the results of this horrendous disaster? For a moment, thoughts about music seemed particularly trivial. After all, music cannot heal the sick, feed the hungry, or provide shelter for the homeless. Then I sunddenly realized that musicians, particularly church musicians, fill a very vital role in times like this. Music may not be able to clothe, feed, or shelter the body, but it reaches, and perhaps even heals the soul in a way that nothing else can. In the midst of a disaster, like Katrina, there are feelings of despair and hopelessness of a depth that is inexpressible. And one of the most important aspects of music, is its ability to express the inexpressible. Hymns and choral music can uplift texts in a way that even the best orator cannot achieve with the spoken word. And organ music, without words, can touch feelings for which there are no words, but are deeply felt nonetheless. As church musicians, our job is to help our congregations reach for the faith and assurance that will help them work through their feelings of hopelessness and despair, pain and sadness. ... Throughout all the moments your congregations' experience--the best, the worst, and all the times in between--continue to do your best to express the inexpressible through music. Alan Strong, Dean |
