John and Marianne Weaver Honored by the AGO National Council

The American Guild of Organists (AGO) presented its eighth annual Recital and Gala Benefit Reception on Saturday, April 21, at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia, Pa. An audience of 421 colleagues, students, and friends came together to celebrate the lifetime achievements of John and Marianne Weaver.

The gala was sponsored by the AGO National Council and its Development Committee. Major support was provided by the Kimmel Center and Pemcor Inc. of Lancaster, Pa., printer of The American Organist Magazine. The event raised more than $25,000 to be invested in the AGO Endowment Fund in the Weavers’ honor.The recital featured John and Marianne Weaver, joined by Diane Meredith Belcher, Chelsea Chen (with Lewis Wong, violin), Ken Cowan, and Alan Morrison performing on the Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ, which was built by Dobson Pipe Organ Builders in 2006. Pipedreams Host Michael Barone moderated a pre-concert on-stage conversation with the performers. The program included Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in E-flat Major (“St. Anne”), Reger’s Chorale-Fantasy on Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern, John Weaver’s Toccata, Gershwin’s I Got Rhythm, Prokofiev’s “Allegro con brio” from Violin Sonata No. 2, the Duruflé Scherzo, Weaver’s Variations on Sine Nomine and Pastorale for Flute and Organ, and Franck’s Choral No. 1 in E Major. The gala benefit reception that followed in the Kimmel Center’s First Tier Lounge was attended by 135 individuals.

Established in 1994, the AGO Endowment Fund provides income to expand programs for leadership development among AGO members; educate new organists; and cultivate new audiences for organ and choral music. Tax-deductible contributions to the Endowment Fund are invested in perpetuity to produce continuing income support for essential Guild programs and educational projects.
