9:15am Opening Worship
This ecumenical service of worship to open the convention will take place at Valparaiso University’s magnificent Chapel of the Resurrection.  The organist will be Dr. Martin Jean, Director of the Yale Institute of Sacred Music and Professor of Organ, Yale University. The Reverend Professor Peter J. Gomes, Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and Pusey Minister of the Memorial Church, Harvard University, will lead the service and deliver the message. Choral music will be provided by The Valparaiso University Bach Choir, under the direction of Christopher Cock, and will include Bach's Motet, Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden, BWV 230, as well as Ich lasse dich nicht, du segnest mich denn, one of the earliest vocal works of J.S. Bach. Other featured choral music will be two world premiere commissioned works: He is the Way by Richard Webster and Works of the Great Spirit by Richard Proulx. The text of the Webster piece is by W.H. Auden and is an excerpt from his Christmas oratorio, For the Time Being. The text of the Proulx work has been adapted from texts by Native Americans Black Elk and Chief Seattle.

11:00pm Late-evening prayer
The Easter Procession – Encounters with the Risen Christ
The paschal season is the most important of the entire Year of Grace but also the one that contains the least amount of music. The Easter Procession provides a juxtaposition of ancient chant and new compositions by James E. Clemens. This Way of the Cross for the Easter Season provides music of great textual integrity, permitting the Church to sing of the encounters with the Risen Christ. All of the pieces are eminently useful throughout the three-year Lectionary in the Easter season but are especially useful as offertory hymns. The music will be provided by the Schola Cantorum of St. Peter the Apostle; J. Michael Thompson, Director; James E. Clemens, Composer.

Tuesday, July 4

8:45am Fourth Presbyterian Church
Singing the Psalms – A blending of anthems and readings based on the Psalms. Dr. Thomas Gouwens will be the organist for the service, the Fourth Presbyterian Church Morning Choir under the direction of Dr. John Sherer will be singing, and Dr. Linda Loving will provide the narrative.

8:45am Holy Name Cathedral RC
A Roman Catholic Mass with Bishop Joseph N. Perry, presider and homilist. This unique service will synthesize the Parisian tradition of Mass settings for two organs and choirs with the current work on restoring dialogic and proper Gregorian chants to the liturgy. The major work will be the Messe en l'honneur de Saint-Louis by Albert Alain. Holy Name Cathedral Music Director Matthew Walsh will conduct organists Sophie-Véronique Cauchefer-Choplin and Dr. H. Ricardo Ramirez and the three Holy Name Cathedral Choirs.

8:45am St. James Cathedral (Episcopal)
A service of Morning Prayer. Jonathan Oblander from Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest, Illinois will be the organist; and the St. James Choir under the direction of Bruce Barber will sing the service. Mother Joy Rogers of St. Thomas Church in Battle Creek, Michigan will serve as homilist.

11:45pm Late-evening Compline
Compline is the final office of the day in the Christian tradition of the Liturgy of the Hours. The term is also called "Night Prayer" or "Prayers at the End of the Day." Compline is derived from the Latin completorium, or complement, as compline can be considered to be the completion of the day. Compline tends to be a contemplative, reverent office that emphasizes spiritual peace calm before bedtime. Compline will be derived mainly from Gregorian Chant and will be open for congregation participation.

Wednesday, July 5

4:15pm Sung Vespers
The choir of the Church of the Ascension in Chicago, led by Thomas Wikman, DOM, will sing a service of evening prayer. The accompanist/organist for the service will be Jonathan Tuuk, organist of the Grand Rapids Symphony in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
